Much experienced, much accomplished... much to do! - Stories from the migration society

Within the framework of the recruitment agreements from 1955 to 1973, a total of around 14 million people came to Germany to work in the Federal Republic. The GDR also recruited so-called contract workers from "brother states. Many settled permanently. They and subsequent generations continue to help shape our society today.

With the exhibition "Much experienced, much accomplished... much to do! - Stories from the Migration Society" DOMiD looks back on more than 60 years of migration history. It sheds light on different topics such as labor migration, language or political commitment. A selection of objects, documents and photographs from DOMiD's unique collection shed light on the experiences of migrants and their descendants.

The exhibition will be shown for the first time on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the recruitment agreement between the FRG and Turkey on October 5, 2021 at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin. On October 26, 2021, the exhibition will be on display at the Gürzenich in Cologne. In the Düsseldorf state parliament, the exhibition will be shown on December 3 at the free hour on the occasion of the anniversary of the recruitment agreement until December 17, 2021. As things stand, the exhibition is not open to the public there due to Corona restrictions.

Federal President visits DOMiD exhibition

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited the exhibition "Much experienced, much achieved... much to do! - Stories from the Migration Society" by DOMiD. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the German-Turkish recruitment agreement, the Turkish Community of Germany had invited to a ceremony in the House of World Cultures Berlin on October 5, 2021.

In his speech, the head of state paid tribute to the achievements of the first migrant workers from Turkey and spoke out in favor of a contemporary culture of remembrance: "The stories of the guest workers deserve an appropriate place in our schoolbooks and in our culture of remembrance. A marginal note does not do justice to their contribution to our country. When we tell their stories, as an integral part of the history of this republic, of this country, only then do we understand the history of us all." In a tour, DOMiD Managing Director Robert Fuchs led the Federal President through the exhibition.

The Federal President also showed interest in the nationwide migration museum "House of the Immigration Society" planned by DOMiD for 2025.

DOMiD Managing Director Robert Fuchs explained: "Opening up our social culture of remembrance to the topic of migration is a positive, an important development. Today we are further along than we were ten years ago. Nevertheless, we still have a way to go to ensure that all perspectives find their way into the country's cultural memory. Events like today's help to achieve this. But the 'House of the Immigration Society,' funded by the federal government and the state of NRW, is also a crucial step toward recognizing a shared history."

The exhibition will be shown for the first time on the occasion of the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the recruitment agreement between the FRG and Turkey on October 5, 2021 at the House of World Cultures in Berlin. On October 26, 2021, the exhibition will be on display at the Gürzenich in Cologne. In the Düsseldorf state parliament, the exhibition will be shown on December 3 for the ceremony marking the anniversary of the recruitment agreement until December 17, 2021. All events can be visited by invitation only. According to the current status, the exhibition is not open to the public in the Landtag NRW due to Corona restrictions.

The exhibition was realized with the kind support of Stiftung Mercator.
