Online exhibition: The millionth. Of people and thwarted plans
Today is International Museum Day - and DOMiD is taking part. To mark International Museum Day, we are presenting the online exhibition ‘The Millionth. Of people and thwarted plans’ as part of this day of action.
‘The millionth. Of people and thwarted plans’ addresses the unpredictability of migration and human behaviour. Even if the term ‘one millionth guest worker’ suggests that migration can be counted and therefore planned and controlled, the exhibition shows the opposite. Using the example of the German ‘economic miracle’, it shows that the FRG's recruitment policy did not go as planned. It was originally only intended to be temporary - both by the state and by numerous labour migrants. However, many people decided to stay in Germany, and so Germany became an immigration society.
The exhibition presents a juxtaposition of objects and stories. Concrete plans and how they were thwarted are visualised.
This exhibition was originally conceived in analogue form and funded by the Ministry for Children, Youth, Family, Equality, Refugees and Integration of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. We have now adapted it for digital presentation.
