New collection object tells the story of the racist arson attack in Mölln in 1992

On November 23, 1992, two German neo-Nazis set fire to the Arslan family home in Mölln. In the attack, 10-year-old Yeliz Arslan, 13-year-old Ayşe Yilmaz and 51-year-old Bahide Arslan were murdered. Other family members were injured, some of them seriously. Previously, the same neo-Nazis had carried out an arson attack on another house in Mölln, in which people from Turkey also lived. Nine of them suffered serious injuries.
İbrahim Arslan survived the racist arson attack in Mölln in 1992 as a seven-year-old boy. He and other family members have long been committed to a dignified commemoration, to strengthening the perspectives of those affected and to networking with other victims of racist violence and people in solidarity.
On the night of the fire, the family not only lost three family members, but also all their belongings. Only a few items could be saved from the burning house. The family donated some of these items to the DOMiD collection in order to keep the memory alive: A Koran, with a scorched cover. A wristwatch that stopped at the moment İbrahim's mother jumped out of the window to save herself from the flames. These testimonies tell of the horror caused by the neo-Nazis.
Today, another object is added to the DOMiD collection. A silver tray, which also shows strong traces of soot from the night of the fire. It was kept in the Haus der Geschichte in Bonn until the Arslan family asserted their claims. During a press event, the House handed over the silver tray to the family. They handed the tray over directly to DOMiD.
“DOMiD tells the story of the migration society in Germany. We know that our family memories are in safe hands here,” says İbrahim Arslan.
